Religion is necessary. The Church is necessary. And the Church is necessary as Christ established her, visible in this world, One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic; founded upon St. Peter, through whom she became centered in Rome. To that Church Christ gave the commission to teach, to rule and to sanctify souls.
Her impact upon society, whether national or international; her uncompromising fidelity to the moral law always; her ability to harmonize unyielding loyalty to the Truth with Charity to all men—these things cannot but commend her to intelligent people of goodwill who study her claims, not superficially but seriously, not with prejudice but impartially.
Such has been the theme of this book, which has not feared to print the worst that can be said against her, knowing that such things serve only to bring out clearly the coherence, the consistency of the one Church on earth which claims to be infallibly true.
May each reader think over these matters, going over them again and again, thoughtfully, prayerfully; and in the degree in which the Truth dawns upon him give himself to it, that it may possess him and manifest itself through him; that some day, please God, he may know it in all its fullness, and be at home within that Catholic Church outside which no one, except it be through no fault of his own, can be saved.
